Serology Testing and DNA Transfer: What the Lab Reports Really Mean
This program offers a detailed and practical overview of serology testing and DNA transfer, with a critical focus on the limitations and interpretive pitfalls of forensic lab reports. Viewers will gain a deeper understanding of how biological fluids are identified and individualized through both presumptive and confirmatory serology tests, and how DNA profiles are developed, from collection and extraction to amplification and analysis.
Importantly, the session highlights the challenges of interpreting DNA presence at the activity level—specifically, how, when, and why DNA may have been deposited at a crime scene. Viewers will learn about issues like indirect transfer, shedder status, secondary and tertiary DNA movement, and the risks of overstating the meaning of trace findings. Through real-world lab report examples, the presentation equips defense attorneys with the ability to question unsupported conclusions, identify misleading language in forensic reports, and uncover instances where key confirmatory testing may have been skipped.
This training is especially valuable for challenging prosecution narratives that hinge on biological evidence without context. Lawyers will walk away with a better grasp of when a lab’s conclusion may exceed what the science can actually support—giving them the ability to cross-examine forensic experts more effectively and frame stronger arguments for reasonable doubt.
Lisa Desire is a former forensic scientist with New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner’s Department of Forensic Biology, the largest laboratory of its kind in North America. During her tenure, she investigated thousands of homicides, sexual assaults, and missing persons cases, and was a supervisor of victim identification for the World Trade Center attack, the most complicated forensic investigation in the history of the United States. Lisa has testified as an Expert Witness in Forensic Biology and DNA Analysis and has earned the certifications of ASCLD-LAB Inspector and FBI DNA Auditor. She was presented with NYPD’s Centurion Award and the Honor Legion’s Certificate of Merit for her contributions on a high-profile serial killer case. Lisa used her experiences to create Prime Suspect LLC, an education and consulting company that brings forensic information to students, teachers, attorneys and law enforcement through hands-on activities, professional development sessions and courtroom assistance. Lisa received her Bachelor of Science degree in Genetic Engineering from Cedar Crest College, and her Master of Science degree in Forensic Science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She has served as Adjunct Lecturers for Rutgers University and the University of Maryland Global Campus. Lisa is currently a member of the International Society of Genetic Genealogy, New Jersey Homicide Investigator’s Association, Chief Science Officer’s panel for SciTech Institute, and serves an instructor for TriTech Forensics as well as the criminal justice advisory boards for Burlington County Institute of Technology, Hunterdon County Vocational School District, and Union County Vocational Technical Schools.
