Ethical Cloud and AI Vendor Selection for Criminal Defenders

This timely and thought-provoking program gives criminal defense lawyers a clear, practical roadmap for navigating one of the most urgent issues in modern practice: the ethical use of AI and cloud-based technology. Using vivid, real-world analogies and concrete examples, the presentation breaks down how AI actually works, where the risks lie, and why blindly adopting these tools can jeopardize client confidentiality, strategy, and even case outcomes.

You’ll walk away with actionable guidance on how to vet vendors, negotiate contracts, and safeguard sensitive client data before it ever leaves your office. The program provides a step-by-step framework—including scorecards, checklists, and model contract language—to help you evaluate AI tools, identify hidden risks like data training and third-party access, and ensure compliance with your ethical duties under rules governing competence, confidentiality, and supervision of non-lawyer assistants.

Most importantly, this session equips you to use AI strategically—without compromising your client’s interests. You’ll learn how to avoid common pitfalls like inadvertent data sharing, conflicts of interest with vendors serving law enforcement, and overreliance on AI-generated content. By the end, you’ll have the tools to confidently integrate AI into your practice in a way that enhances efficiency while protecting privilege, preserving loyalty, and strengthening your overall defense strategy.
